Decluttering is essential when trying to downsize, especially for city homes like Letchworth and Baldock. Here are some Leysbrook tips on decluttering.
When to Declutter
A month before the move is too soon to do a proper job of decluttering and removing things you don’t need. A good time is at least 3 months, finishing the last month you’re in your old home.
When downsizing you should consider what furniture you really need. Don’t bring all of it to your new home as it’s a waste of effort and could cost you more if you’re paying for help.
Consider What’s Worth Keeping
You should organise things into separate piles, keep, sell, donate and trash. Decluttering months before you move can allow you plenty of time to really consider what’s important and make multiple trips to charity chops etc and possible trips to the dump.
A general rule that can help is if you’ve used it in a year. If you haven’t used it in the last year, do you need it? It may be tempting to keep an item in the moment but be realistic and honest. IF you haven’t used it within the year then you’re unlikely to use it in the future.
Digitalise
It’s important to keep important documents and photos. But if these documents and photos can be digitalised and kept on a USB it can save you so much storage or wasting some good cupboard space on some papers.
Avoid Renting Storage Units
People tend to think storage units will be temporary but that often doesn’t become the case. It enables people to create bad hording habits and end up keeping unnecessary items. It’s also extra money that could go towards something else, so be honest on whether something is worth keeping or not.
Avoid Hidden Costs
When downsizing it can free up money that you were spending on a bigger house, but be sensible and make sure everything is covered before spending money on new furniture, also make sure you know what you’re getting into, be cautious of any home repairs etc.
