Despite everything you might hear about younger people giving up on homeownership, the ambition remains remarkably strong.
The English Housing Survey reveals that 69% of renters aged 18 to 34 still expect to buy a home eventually. However, for many, it feels like a distant goal rather than an imminent move. Among those expecting to buy, 49% believe it will take five years or more. Another 34% expect to purchase within two to five years, while 11% believe they will buy within one to two years. The remaining 6% expect to buy within the next year.
The dream has not disappeared. It is simply being delayed by the challenge of saving a deposit, finding an affordable home and securing a suitable mortgage.
